About Tim

Dr. Tim Buchholz is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County in Wausau, Wisconsin, where he directs the Concert Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and “Jazz Central Voices,” community vocal jazz ensemble.  He also teaches classes in music theory, aural skills, and vocal techniques.  Tim completed his Doctorate in Jazz Vocal performance from the Studio Music and Jazz Department at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.  He is currently the WCDA Repertoire and Standards Chair for Vocal Jazz in the state of Wisconsin.

From 2007-2012 Tim taught at the University of Miami Frost School of Music as both a Doctoral Teaching Assistant and upon graduation as a Lecturer where he taught jazz voice lessons, directed the jazz vocal ensembles JV1 and Extensions, and taught classes in jazz vocal styles, jazz vocal improvisation, vocal jazz arranging, and group jazz piano.  From 2009-2012 he was also an adjunct faculty member at Miami Dade College where he directed both of the vocal jazz choirs and taught jazz voice lessons, jazz improvisation classes, and music theory classes.

Born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Tim started his college career at Western Michigan University where he spent all four years there in the award winning vocal jazz ensemble “Gold Company,” under the direction of Dr. Steve Zegree.  Tim spent his last year in the group as the assistant director.  Tim was also a member of the Gold Company Sextet for two years, touring internationally and performing at many prestigious venues.  Additionally, Tim participated in the WMU University Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Joe Miller, and studied voice with Professor Diana Spradling.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BM in Jazz Studies from the honors college at WMU, Tim attended graduate school at California State University at Long
Beach.  While at CSULB, Tim was a member of the university’s top vocal jazz ensemble, “Pacific Standard Time,” under the direction of Christine Helferich-Guter.  During Tim’s two years as a graduate teaching assistant at CSULB, he directed the vocal jazz ensemble, “Jazz and Tonic,” giving numerous performances and attending many festivals with the group.  Upon graduation Tim was named to the Graduate Dean’s List, an award given only to the top 1% of all graduate students at the University.  During his final year in California, Tim directed the Vocal Jazz Ensembles at Santa Monica High School.

In the summer of 2007, Tim married his high school sweetheart, Anna Nummelin, and in the fall of that year, the two moved to Miami, Florida to pursue advanced degrees at the University of Miami.  After 5 years of living in Miami, they were thrilled to accept positions in Wausau, Wisconsin, 30 minutes away from where they grew up.

As a singer, Tim has performed at Carnegie Hall, New York City’s Lincoln Center, and has toured internationally to such countries as South Africa, Costa Rica, France, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Austria, and Belgium.  Tim has performed with many notable jazz artists including Bobby McFerrin, Darmon Meader, Tierney Sutton, Janis Siegel, Patty Austin, Fred Hersch, Shelly Berg, Danilo Perez, and Dave Grusin.  Tim was named “Best Collegiate Jazz Arranger” by Downbeat magazine in 2006-2007 and “Best Collegiate Jazz Singer” in 2005-2006.  His arrangements have been published by Sound Music Publications and used throughout the country in high school and college vocal jazz ensembles and for numerous all-state vocal jazz choir events.

In his spare time, Tim and his wife Anna enjoy the outdoors, whether it be running, biking, kayaking, backpacking, rock climbing, or the sport of adventure racing.
